Connie Ong Hui May, 20, who is spastic, did not expect that she would emerge as the best student under the STPM 2018 special student category. The graduate from SMK Oya, Sarawak, who lost her ability to walk when she was 10, said she was thankful to her friends and teachers who helped her through tough times. “My teachers always made sure I was able to catch up with lessons, while my friends would help me get some classes located in places that are not accessible to me because I’m in a wheelchair,” said the art stream student whose mother passed away some years ago due to cancer. “My father played a big role. He always finds time to drive me to and from school every day,” she said of her father who works as a van driver. She said her secret to scoring a CGPA of 4.0 was to understand the syllabus thoroughly. “Don’t memorise, it is better to understand. Towards exam time, I would study harder and understand the whole textbook – not leaving out a single detail,” she said, adding her motivation to study was her dream of enrolling into Cambridge University someday.
